Frequently asked questions about paint lacquers for plastic, GRP and glass
Do I need to apply a clear coat lacquer?
We would encourage you to apply a clear coat to prolong the life of the paint, especially if it is being used outside. Using a clear coat helps to protect the paint from UV light, from dirt and prevents it from fading or chalking.
Is there ongoing support available?
Our team are proud to support our customers throughout their time with us, from the initial enquiry through to every order or technical query. We have one sales team which handles all new enquiries and existing clients which means you will get to develop a strong relationship with us as your supplier.
AVKO is proud to say that we’re still supplying our first ever customer 25+ years later, which should be evidence enough of the level of customer service we offer as standard.
What gloss/sheen levels are your clear coat lacquers available in?
Our clear coat lacquers for plastic, GRP and glass are available in matt, satin, gloss and high gloss finishes.
Are your lacquers for plastic, GRP and glass UV stable?
Yes, our air-drying 2K clear lacquers contain UV filters, which means your work will be even more durable in external conditions.
Can I apply the lacquer while the paint is still wet?
Yes, clear coating is very quick as you can apply the clear coat wet on wet with our top coats.
How much hardener do I need to use with the lacquer?
For most of our clear coat lacquers, the mixing ratio of lacquer to hardener (which we also supply) is 4:1 or 2:1. Make sure you always check the product label before mixing.
Can I brush on the lacquer?
No, all of our products are spray-applied so we do not recommend using a brush to apply our lacquers for plastic, GRP or glass.
Can I use a lacquer internally, or only externally?
Our protective lacquers can also be applied internally to increase the longevity of your work.
How heavy should I apply the lacquer?
Not heavy at all. Only one light to medium coat is enough to give you all the necessary protection.

Lacquering advice for plastic and GRP
Clear coating is very quick, as you can apply the clear coat wet on wet with AVKO paint. Only one light to medium coat is enough to give you all the necessary protection.
Our range of AVKO Clear Coat lacquers can improve the longevity of your work, especially in external conditions, giving you and your customers peace of mind.
Clear coats can also be used for internal furniture to increase the longevity of the paint.
Advice for substrates near the sea or in highly polluted areas
For substrates situated near the sea or in a heavily polluted area (e.g., city centres), we highly recommend using a clear coat, which will protect the paint from the influence of salt air or pollution. Without a clear coat, the paint could fade or chalk over time.
Advice for pastel-colour paint coatings
For pastel-coloured paint coatings that will be subject to excessive wear and tear, we recommend the clear coat to improve the paint’s resistance to markings and fading.
Advice for metallic and pearlescent coatings
For metallic and pearlescent coatings which are used externally, we recommend the clear coat for extra protection and to increase colour longevity. These coatings are more susceptible to weathering as they contain aluminium particles.
